Lesson

The median is the middle value in a dataset when the data is arranged in ascending or descending order. If there is an even number of data points, the median is the average of the two middle values. The median is less sensitive to extreme values (outliers) than the mean and is often used to describe skewed distributions.

Practice Question #1

Which measure of central tendency is less sensitive to outliers?

Terms

Median:
The middle value in a dataset when the data is arranged in ascending or descending order.
Mean:
The sum of all data points divided by the number of data points.
Mode:
The value that appears most frequently in a dataset.
Range:
The difference between a dataset's highest and lowest values.

Practice Question #2

If a dataset has an even number of data points, how is the median calculated?

Do Not Confuse With

Mean:
The mean is another measure of central tendency, but it is more sensitive to outliers than the median.
Mode:
The mode is the most frequently occurring value in a dataset, not necessarily the middle value.
Standard Deviation:
A measure of dispersion, not a central tendency, that describes the average distance of data points from the mean.

Practice Question #3

What is the median of the following dataset: 3, 7, 9, 12, 15?

Real-World Example

A teacher wants to determine the central tendency of her student's test scores. She finds that the mean score is 75, but one student scored 100, which is significantly higher than the rest of the class. To get a more accurate representation of the central tendency, she calculates the median score of 72, giving her a better understanding of the typical student's performance.

Rhyme

In the middle, you will find, the median's value well-defined. Not swayed by outliers' sway, it shows the center, come what may.

Formula Examples

Consider the dataset: 3, 7, 5, 9, 1 1. Arrange the dataset in ascending order: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 2. Identify the middle value: In this case, the middle value is 5 (since there are an odd number of values in the dataset). Therefore, the median is 5.

Pitfalls to Remember

Even number of values:
When there is an even number of values in the dataset, the median is the average of the two middle values.
Skewed data:
The median may not accurately represent the center of the dataset if the data is heavily skewed.
